Veterinary Officer – Necropsy (Wildlife Programme)

We are working exclusively on behalf of a government-backed programme to recruit a Veterinary Officer for a unique position in County Kerry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform post-mortem examinations on badgers and foxes
  • Conduct visual investigationsy
  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory testing,
  • Follow established protocols related to disease surveillance and animal health
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of all findings and procedures
  • Comply with biosecurity and health & safety guidelines
  • Communicate effectively with field staff and relevant authorities

The Ideal Candidate:

  • This is a focused, structured role suited to a veterinary professional with an interest in wildlife, public health, or pathology.
  • This role is open to both newly qualified and experienced clinical vets, provided you have some prior exposure to post-mortem or necropsy work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out necropsies on wildlife specimens (badgers and foxes)
  • Collecting and handling tissue samples for further diagnostic testing
  • Producing detailed post-mortem reports in line with official protocols
  • Ensuring strict biosecurity and carcass disposal measures are followed
  • Liaising with field collection teams and government departments as needed
  • Contributing to the wider understanding of disease patterns in wildlife, particularly in relation to TB control

More Details: 

  • Monday to Friday only (no weekends or on-call)
  • Based fully on-site in Co. Kerry
  • Training and support provided
  • Long-term government contract (initial 3-year term)

Candidate Profile:

  • VCI registered
  • Experience with necropsy or pathology preferred but not essential
  • Comfortable working independently and in a highly regulated environment
  • High level of attention to detail and record-keeping
  • Interest in public health, wildlife, or epidemiology a plus
