Veterinary Pathologist
County Kerry
Long-Term Government Contract

Lloyd & Cowan are once again partnering with a government-backed programme in County Kerry, now seeking an experienced Veterinary Pathologist to join their wildlife disease surveillance team. This is a unique, highly impactful role supporting national monitoring of badger and fox populations, focused on public health, epidemiology and structured diagnostic work.

The Opportunity
This contract offers stability, professional autonomy and the chance to contribute directly to wildlife disease control in Ireland. The role now carries an enhanced pathology requirement, with the successful candidate expected to have experience in histopathological examinations and confident tissue evaluation skills.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct full post-mortem examinations on wildlife species (badgers and foxes)
• Perform detailed gross pathology and collect appropriate tissue samples
• Carry out histopathological examination including tissue processing, slide interpretation and diagnostic reporting
• Prepare and submit samples for additional laboratory tests
• Maintain meticulous documentation and traceability
• Work within strict biosecurity and regulatory protocols
• Liaise with government teams, field operatives and laboratory partners
• Support ongoing national wildlife disease research and reporting activity

Who This Suits
This role is ideal for a vet with a strong interest in pathology, public health, wildlife or surveillance work. A background in diagnostic pathology or post-mortem work is essential, and the ability to independently perform histopathology is now a core requirement.

Essential Requirements
• VCI registration
• Proven experience in veterinary pathology
• Competence in histopathological examination and reporting
• Previous post-mortem, necropsy or gross pathology experience
• Strong attention to detail and comfort working within set protocols
• Ability to work independently in a regulated, data-driven environment

What’s on Offer
• Salary €50,000 – €65,000 depending on experience
• Monday to Friday only – no weekends or out-of-hours
• Single-site working in Co. Kerry
• Health insurance included
• Company laptop and phone
• Paid annual leave
• Secure 3-year government contract with structured onboarding
• Opportunity to contribute to nationally significant wildlife health programmes

If you’re an experienced veterinary pathologist seeking a meaningful, stable role with a strong diagnostic focus, I’d love to discuss this with you.
