We’re working with a leading organisation in Cork that is looking to welcome a Breeding Programme Assistant to join their growing team and support the efficient, sustainable day-to-day running of their Breeding Programme.
This is a varied role that blends hands-on animal care with people management, administration, and planning. One of the veterinary nurses we recently placed with the organisation is already getting on brilliantly, which really reflects the supportive culture and positive working environment.
The Role
You’ll play a key part in maintaining high welfare standards, while supporting and guiding volunteers involved in the programme. You will be actively involved with matings and whelpings and accountable for the health of puppies and breeding dogs in your care.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the day-to-day running of the Breeding Programme
- Safe transport of dogs to veterinary clinics
- Monitoring pregnant stock and assisting with whelpings
- Care of pups-in-the-nest and supporting socialisation
- Recruit, train and support volunteers
- Plan dog movements and transportation
- Maintain accurate animal and volunteer records
- Provide practical medical care and advice to volunteers
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders
- Support welfare, temperament assessments and continuous improvement initiatives
What’s on Offer
- Salary €36,000–€38,000 DOE (flexible for the right candidate)
- Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm
- Weekend work only when required for occasional whelps, with time off in lieu
- Overtime above 37.5 hours returned as time off in lieu

The Ideal Candidate
- Registered Veterinary Nursing degree would be advantageous but not essential
- Certificate and/or experience in animal welfare, dog handling or equivalent
- Experience coaching, teaching and supporting others (ideally volunteers)
- Able to demonstrate strong aptitude for dog handling and management
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to work flexibly and independently
- Strong verbal, written and IT skills
- Proven interpersonal and communication skills with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Full driving licence required
