Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon – Devon/Cornwall

Up to £60,000 DOE | 4-Day Week | Hospital Status Pending | Exceptional Clinical Facilities

Lloyd & Cowan Veterinary Recruitment is delighted to be working with a highly progressive, multi-site small animal practice in the South West, seeking a Veterinary Surgeon to join their friendly and forward-thinking team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a genuinely supportive, skilled and close-knit group of vets in a practice that combines high clinical standards with an outstanding quality of life.

The Practice

This well-established practice operates across four well-equipped sites, with a team of 14 vets (9 FTE). Facilities include:

  • Dedicated prep rooms and operating theatres

  • Dental suites

  • Separate kennels and cattery

  • Digital X-ray and ultrasound

  • Full in-house laboratory

  • Endoscopy

  • Laparoscopic spay equipment

  • CT scanner installation currently in progress

  • On track for RCVS Hospital Status following recent inspection

The clinical team includes advanced practitioners and certificate holders in:

  • Pain management & anaesthesia

  • Medicine

  • Exotics

  • Ophthalmology

  • Behaviour

Further certificates in cardiology, dentistry, dermatology and surgery are currently in progress. The practice also benefits from a peripatetic surgeon, acupuncture services, and a highly experienced nursing team with additional qualifications in areas including behaviour and anaesthesia.

They are proud to provide small animal rotations for Bristol University veterinary students and were ranked number one for teaching experience last year — reflecting their strong commitment to mentorship, communication and collaborative working.

The Role

They are seeking a vet who is:

  • Committed, motivated and collaborative

  • Focused on excellent client care and communication

  • A true team player who values a positive, supportive culture

This role would suit a vet who enjoys high-quality general practice and wants access to advanced facilities, specialist support and ongoing professional development.

Out of Hours

The practice runs its own shared OOH service:

  • 1 weekend in 8, with the following Monday off

  • 1 in 8 Saturdays (likely to reduce with an additional vet joining)

  • Saturdays centralised at the hospital branch (8:30am–5pm)

  • Maximum of 4 nights on-call every 4 weeks (2 included within a worked weekend)

  • Full RVN and vet support for inpatient care

The rota is structured to ensure fairness and recovery time, maintaining a sustainable work-life balance.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary up to £60,000, commensurate with experience

  • 4-day working week (flexibility for 3-day week if preferred)

  • 6.6 weeks holiday including bank holidays

  • RCVS fees, VDS, BVA and one additional membership paid

  • 5 days CPD with £1,750 budget

  • Certificate support and career progression encouraged

  • Regular performance and development reviews

  • Health insurance

  • Health Shield (covering a wide range of wellbeing treatments)

  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay

  • Company sick pay

Location

Situated in the beautiful South West, this role offers the opportunity to enjoy stunning coastlines, countryside and outdoor lifestyle, without compromising on clinical standards or career progression.

If you’re looking for a practice that genuinely values teamwork, supports professional growth and invests heavily in its facilities and people, this could be the ideal next step.
