Mixed Animal Veterinarian – Full Time
Sheep & Beef Focus | Taumarunui, Ruapehu District
Are you a mixed animal veterinarian who enjoys real variety in your caseload and the kind of work that keeps every day interesting? This is a rare opportunity to join a well-supported rural practice in the heart of one of New Zealand’s most scenic and adventure-filled regions.
Based in Taumarunui, you’ll work across a genuine mixed caseload, with a strong focus on sheep and beef, complemented by companion animal work. This role suits a veterinarian who enjoys getting out on farm, building strong relationships with farming clients, and maintaining confidence and competence in small animal medicine and surgery.
If you’re looking for a role where you can practice true mixed veterinary medicine, develop your skills across production and companion animal work, and enjoy a lifestyle that most people only get on holiday, this position offers an outstanding long-term opportunity.
The Role
This is a full-time mixed animal position based in Taumarunui, servicing the wider King Country and Ruapehu region. Your work will be a balanced mix of sheep and beef production animal work alongside companion animal consultations and procedures.
You’ll be part of a shared after-hours roster with another local clinic, ensuring reasonable on-call commitments with strong backup and support when needed. The caseload is varied, engaging, and ideal for a vet who enjoys autonomy while still valuing teamwork and collaboration.
What We’re Looking For
-
Experience and confidence with sheep and beef farming systems
-
Solid companion animal skills and the ability to manage small animal consults and routine procedures
-
A professional, client-focused approach
-
Confidence working independently in a busy rural practice
-
Strong time management and organisational skills
-
A collaborative, personable approach to building long-term client relationships
-
Willingness to participate in a shared after-hours roster
What You’ll Gain
-
A modern, well-equipped clinic with a strong support team
-
Excellent professional development opportunities, both formal CPD and on-the-job mentoring
-
The opportunity to shape your role around your clinical interests over time
-
A friendly, supportive, and family-oriented workplace culture
-
A competitive remuneration package reflective of your experience and skill set
-
The chance to build genuine, long-term relationships with farming and companion animal clients
The Clinic Environment
You’ll be joining an established mixed practice with a strong local reputation and a committed veterinary team. The clinic services a true hill country sheep and beef district, offering meaningful, hands-on rural veterinary work rather than purely transactional farm visits.
You’ll work alongside other mixed animal veterinarians and benefit from access to a wider professional network, including experienced clinicians across production, companion animal, and specialist disciplines. This means you can practice independently while still having expert support and second opinions readily available when you need them.
The Lifestyle
Taumarunui places you in the middle of the North Island’s adventure playground. This is a location that genuinely delivers on lifestyle:
-
Ski fields and alpine scenery within easy reach
-
World-class tramping and outdoor adventures nearby
-
Mountain biking, river sports, fishing, and lake activities on your doorstep
It’s an ideal base for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, wants space to breathe, and values community living without sacrificing access to incredible recreation. This is the kind of place where your days off actually feel like days off.
If working in a genuine hill country sheep and beef district, with a supportive team and unbeatable access to outdoor adventure sounds like your kind of role, this could be the lifestyle and career move you’ve been looking for.
