Health Assurance Vet – Large Animal
12-Month Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Cover)

Lloyd & Cowan Veterinary Recruitment are delighted to be working with a progressive, science-led large animal business seeking a Health Assurance Vet to focus on herd health and genetic nucleus management.

This is a hands-on, impactful role centred around delivering best-in-class veterinary care, biosecurity, and welfare standards across high-health herds and associated semen collection centres. The successful candidate will play a key part in driving continuous improvement in herd performance, compliance, and reproductive management.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract (maternity cover), with an ideal start date in March to allow for a comprehensive handover.

The Role

Clinical Care & Herd Health

  • Deliver comprehensive veterinary care across the Genetic Nucleus herd and Semen Collection Centres.

  • Prevent, diagnose, monitor, and treat health conditions in calves, heifers, and bulls with meticulous record-keeping.

  • Lead all aspects of calving, including assisted calvings and caesarean sections where required.

  • Manage pregnant animals through the pre-calving period using structured monitoring protocols.

Biosecurity, Safety & Compliance

  • Uphold gold-standard biosecurity and Health & Safety practices across all sites.

  • Ensure full compliance with UK and EU regulations relating to exports, routine testing, and certification.

  • Accurately complete licensing and export documentation within required timeframes.

  • Support investigations relating to biosecurity or safety breaches where necessary.

Continuous Improvement

  • Review and enhance herd health protocols using evidence-based approaches.

  • Identify root causes of herd performance or health challenges and implement corrective strategies.

  • Evaluate new veterinary products and preventative approaches to optimise health outcomes.

  • Develop specialist understanding of the T15 breed to support improvements in health and productivity.

Training & Collaboration

  • Provide practical training to livestock teams on welfare, husbandry, biosecurity, and health protocols.

  • Collaborate with veterinary colleagues to develop consistent best-practice materials.

  • Mentor team members in calving management and herd health procedures.

  • Support coordination of testing, exports, and animal movements.

Health Testing & Reporting

  • Plan and complete statutory and internal health testing requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records to support audits, compliance, and herd planning.

About You

  • BVSc or equivalent.

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in large animal practice.

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Strong clinical capability in herd health, youngstock, reproductive management, and calving.

  • Confident working independently while contributing to a wider team.

  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Flexible to travel between sites, including occasional out-of-hours work.

  • Positive, proactive approach with a strong commitment to welfare and safety.

This is an excellent opportunity for a large animal vet seeking a meaningful, performance-driven role within a forward-thinking environment.
