Health Assurance Vet – Large Animal
12-Month Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Cover)
Lloyd & Cowan Veterinary Recruitment are delighted to be working with a progressive, science-led large animal business seeking a Health Assurance Vet to focus on herd health and genetic nucleus management.
This is a hands-on, impactful role centred around delivering best-in-class veterinary care, biosecurity, and welfare standards across high-health herds and associated semen collection centres. The successful candidate will play a key part in driving continuous improvement in herd performance, compliance, and reproductive management.
This is a 12-month fixed-term contract (maternity cover), with an ideal start date in March to allow for a comprehensive handover.
The Role
Clinical Care & Herd Health

Deliver comprehensive veterinary care across the Genetic Nucleus herd and Semen Collection Centres.

Prevent, diagnose, monitor, and treat health conditions in calves, heifers, and bulls with meticulous record-keeping.

Lead all aspects of calving, including assisted calvings and caesarean sections where required.

Manage pregnant animals through the pre-calving period using structured monitoring protocols.
Biosecurity, Safety & Compliance

Uphold gold-standard biosecurity and Health & Safety practices across all sites.

Ensure full compliance with UK and EU regulations relating to exports, routine testing, and certification.

Accurately complete licensing and export documentation within required timeframes.

Support investigations relating to biosecurity or safety breaches where necessary.
Continuous Improvement

Review and enhance herd health protocols using evidence-based approaches.

Identify root causes of herd performance or health challenges and implement corrective strategies.

Evaluate new veterinary products and preventative approaches to optimise health outcomes.

Develop specialist understanding of the T15 breed to support improvements in health and productivity.
Training & Collaboration

Provide practical training to livestock teams on welfare, husbandry, biosecurity, and health protocols.

Collaborate with veterinary colleagues to develop consistent best-practice materials.

Mentor team members in calving management and herd health procedures.

Support coordination of testing, exports, and animal movements.
Health Testing & Reporting

Plan and complete statutory and internal health testing requirements.

Maintain accurate records to support audits, compliance, and herd planning.
About You
-
BVSc or equivalent.
-
Minimum 2 years’ experience in large animal practice.
-
Full UK driving licence.

Strong clinical capability in herd health, youngstock, reproductive management, and calving.

Confident working independently while contributing to a wider team.

Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

Flexible to travel between sites, including occasional out-of-hours work.

Positive, proactive approach with a strong commitment to welfare and safety.
