Large Animal (Dairy) Veterinarian

Permanent, Full-Time | Waipa District, Waikato

Talal at Lloyd & Cowan Recruitment is excited to be working with a progressive rural veterinary practice in the Waipa region that is genuinely doing things differently.

This role is open to dairy veterinarians at varying stages of their career — what matters most is your mindset. If you’re motivated, curious, and excited about shaping the future of agri-veterinary services alongside forward-thinking farmers, this is an outstanding opportunity.

Why This Role Is Different

This practice is built around relationships, influence, and impact — not just call-outs.

You’ll work with an engaged, proactive client base who value collaboration and are focused on farm performance and long-term outcomes. Consulting is intentional and structured, with regular on-farm conversations that allow time to talk goals, strategy, and improvement — often over a coffee, not a crisis.

You’ll also be supported to pursue your own agri-vet interests, whether that’s consulting, business development, leadership, or innovation. This is a team that encourages you to grow your career in a way that suits you.

Innovation is part of everyday practice, with strong involvement in agritech, data, and wearable technology, as well as access to custom-built systems designed specifically for dairy veterinarians.

The Role

This is a full-time Large Animal Dairy Veterinarian position based in the Waipa region.

You’ll be delivering high-quality veterinary care to dairy farming clients while playing a key role in supporting herd health, farm performance, and long-term client success.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing proactive, high-standard dairy veterinary care

  • Conducting herd health programmes, fertility management, and disease prevention

  • Performing diagnostics, scanning, and surgical procedures as required

  • Supporting farmers to improve animal health and farm performance

  • Building trusted, long-term relationships with clients

  • Maintaining accurate clinical records and reporting

  • Collaborating closely with the wider veterinary and technical team

  • Participating in a shared after-hours on-call roster

About You

This role will suit a veterinarian who enjoys dairy practice and values relationships, innovation, and teamwork.

You will ideally bring:

  • A veterinary degree recognised in New Zealand

  • A strong interest in dairy and livestock production

  • Confidence with scanning, sick cow work, and herd health programmes

  • A relationship-focused, practical approach with farmers

  • Curiosity and openness to new ideas and technologies

  • A collaborative, team-first mindset

  • A genuine desire to grow and make an impact on farm

What’s On Offer

You’ll be supported with a competitive and well-rounded package designed to support both career development and wellbeing, including:

  • Competitive remuneration

  • Six-monthly development and career planning reviews

  • Ongoing CPD and professional development support

  • Employee assistance programme

  • Wellbeing and lifestyle initiatives

  • Employer KiwiSaver contributions

  • Staff discounts on veterinary services and products

  • Annual flu vaccination

  • An additional paid day off for your birthday

  • Long service leave

  • Enhanced parental leave provisions

  • Flexible working arrangements where possible

Why Waipa, Waikato?

Waipa is one of New Zealand’s most desirable dairy regions. With productive farms, progressive farmers, and welcoming rural communities such as Cambridge and Te Awamutu, it offers the perfect balance between a rewarding veterinary career and an excellent lifestyle.

You’ll enjoy great schools, strong community sport and social life, excellent food and coffee, and easy access to both coastlines and outdoor adventure — all while living in a region that genuinely feels like home.
