The Location
With beautiful beaches 30 minutes away, mountains 2 hours and the most stunning ‘office’ scenery to drive through on a daily basis, we have the ideal lifestyle.  Otautau is 40 minutes from Invercargill, 2 hours from Queenstown and there are direct flights to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland from Invercargill.

We have an abundance of outdoor and indoor sporting opportunities, good local shopping and plenty of popular eateries.  Schools and medical resources are of a high standard and the relatively low cost of living makes it an ideal location for individuals, couples and families alike.

With the buoyant economy here in Southland and most industries crying out for staff, there are plenty of job opportunities for partners making the move with you.

About Us

We are a genuine mixed practice with around 75% of our work large animal, predominantly Dairy, and 25% Companion animal.  Our varied caseload allows for special interests to be developed and for individuals to grow and expand the services we provide.  We have some great clients who give us the opportunity for involvement in their business on a more intensive basis and as a result, we have vets trained in In Calf, Healthy Hoof and with interests in Dairy Nutrition and Equine Dentistry.

With digital imaging, ultrasound and in-house pathology, we aim to maximise our diagnostic capabilities and provide the best medical and surgical options for our patients.  Our nearest referral centre is in Christchurch, providing ample opportunity for developing interests in both companion animal medicine and surgery.

About the Role
Our preference would be for a full-time veterinary surgeon but have scope to accommodate a part-time role for the right candidate.

We are open 8.30am-5.30pm, with no weekend clinics and we strive for a 1-in-6 OOH roster or better throughout the year, apart from 10-12 weeks in Spring where we have two Vets on-call.  We have Rural Animal Technicians to ease the burden of routine large animal work and qualified Veterinary Nurses on-call at the weekend to assist with emergencies and in-patient care.

Due to the seasonal nature of our large animal work, there is a huge variation in the weighting of clinical work, but we aim to maintain variation whilst also accommodating individual skills and strengths.  There are always opportunities to learn new skills and with our great team of Vets, someone is always happy to lend a hand if more hands, more experience or just some friendly encouragement is required.

A healthy work-life balance is important to us all and we aim to ensure that everyone gets their allocated breaks and finishes on time.

About You
Ultimately, we are looking for the right candidate to fit in with our team. Qualifications are obviously essential, but we are happy to work with differing levels of experience to ensure that you are confident in your role.  The qualities that are particularly important to us are:

  • Communication and people skills

  • Team player, but able to work independently when required

  • Happy to work with a variety of animals

  • A good sense of humour!

Our Offer

  • A competitive salary from NZ$70,000 that reflects skills, experience and expertise

  • Salary review after 3 months employment

  • Generous CPD allowance

  • Annual Practicing Certificate and Professional subscriptions

  • Relocation package

  • Assistance with finding initial accommodation

  • Long-term opportunities +/- Practice ownership for the right candidate
