Mixed Veterinary Role

The Work:

The caseload is truly mixed, treating small animals, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, commercial pigs and poultry, camelids and horses, ranging from large-scale farming enterprises to small holdings. The farm work accounts for about 80% of the workload, and they have four vets working in the small animal department all day.  

  • We are looking for a clinician with experience who will embrace the diversity of their workload. An they can tailor this role to your interests.

  • A degree of specialisation is encouraged, and knowledge sharing and learning are always ongoing.

  • There is plenty of scope for personal development, with several team members studying towards further qualifications.

  • Paraprofessionals complement their service, undertaking TB testing, ultrasound scanning, freeze branding and foot trimming.

  • Monthly early morning clinical meetings where vets present a condition or case for clinical discussion over breakfast.

Hours:

  • Full-time vets work a 4 ½ day week; the surgery is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm and 9 am – 1 pm on Saturdays.

  • Vets enjoy a full weekday off every four weeks.

  • With a 12-week rolling on-call duty rota, and there are nine weekends out of every 12-week block where you will be completely off.

  • All emergency calls are handled by a third party who passes calls on to the duty vet. They also operate a second call system for out-of-hours cover, supplemented further during the busy lambing times so that three vets are on duty.

  • Holidays start at 20 days, plus bank holidays, with a 4.5-day week; holiday entitlement increases by one day for every year’s service to 25 days

  • Vets get time off over Christmas/New Year to travel home to their families.
