Head Veterinary Nurse (Maternity Cover) – Greater Hertfordshire Area

Full-Time | Fixed-Term Contract | Leading Veterinary Group | No OOHs

We’re working with a well-established, forward-thinking veterinary practice in the Hertfordshire region, part of a larger veterinary group known for its commitment to clinical excellence and staff development. This thriving small animal practice is now seeking a Head Veterinary Nurse to join the team on a maternity cover contract.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced RVN ready to step into a leadership role or for a current Head Nurse seeking a fresh environment in which to apply and grow their skills. You’ll be joining a supportive, collaborative team in a practice that values nurse-driven care and fosters a culture of professional development.

About the Role

  • Full-time maternity cover contract

  • Standard hours with no out-of-hours requirements

  • Weekend work on a fair rota

  • Hands-on involvement in clinical nursing, consultations, and patient care

  • Leadership of the nursing team, including mentorship and workflow management

  • Opportunity to shape and grow nurse clinics and client engagement

The role offers the perfect balance between clinical responsibility and leadership, ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring others while still being active in day-to-day nursing.

What We’re Looking For

  • RCVS-registered Veterinary Nurse

  • Previous experience in a senior or head nurse role preferred, but confident senior RVNs are welcome to apply

  • Passion for high standards of patient care, nurse-led services, and team collaboration

  • Strong organisational and communication skills

  • Ability to inspire, guide and support a nursing team within a structured, group-led setting

What’s On Offer

  • Competitive salary depending on experience

  • 5 weeks' annual leave plus bank holidays (increasing with service)

  • Additional paid wellbeing day each year

  • Funded CPD allowance (£750 + 2 days)

  • Internal CPD access and career development support through clinical communities

  • Certificate support available (subject to length of contract)

  • Paid RCVS and VDS fees

  • Health cash plan (covering dental, physio and optical needs)

  • 24/7 access to private GP and counselling services

  • Cycle to Work scheme, and staff discounts

Why This Role?

This is a great opportunity to step into a clinical leadership role within a well-resourced practice that places emphasis on teamwork, development, and excellent standards of care. As part of a larger veterinary group, you’ll benefit from shared knowledge, support networks, and structured pathways for progression—while still enjoying the feel of a close-knit team environment.
