Location:

This busy practice here at Blackwood is based in the heart of the South Wales valleys.  Just a few minutes’ walk from the small bustling town centre of Blackwood with its shops, café’s and amenities and just a few minutes’ drive to the welsh countryside with its rolling mountains, rivers, castles, forests and lakes. The Welsh capital city of Cardiff is 30 minutes in a southerly direction and the breath taking Brecon Beacons National Park and the beautiful rugged welsh coastline are both less than an hour away.  There is ample parking on site and road, rail and bus links are plentiful in all directions.  

The Practice:

They have a spacious small animal practice, that is 6 years old and have the clientele of a 15 year old practice. The facilities are modern and well maintained, having 4 separate kennels areas for dogs, cats, exotics and isolation. There has been continuous investment in diagnostic, surgical, monitoring and therapeutic equipment for both small animals and exotic pets and we have our own comprehensive in house laboratory with biochemistry, Epoch, electrolytes, haematology, microscopes and small exotic haematology. Also, an orthopaedic equipment, a dentistry machine, IPPV, multi- parameter monitor with capnography, ECG, a modern ultrasound machine, digital x-ray, a tonometer, electrocautery, rigid endoscope and Class 4 laser machine. We are always looking for opportunities to expand our capabilities and our services.

Work Cases:

As well as routine surgeries and clinics they also do more complex surgeries such as orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries (trauma and non-trauma) and echocardiography.  We see a large number of

pets for medical and surgical treatment including dogs, cats, rabbits as well as small mammals like hamsters, rats and guinea pigs and more exotic exotics like sugar gliders, skunks, hedgehogs, reptiles and birds (including birds of prey)

The Team:

They have a great team, headed up by 2 exceptional vets, who are also certificate holders. .The veterinary team is supplemented by 2 additional full time vets and a team of 5 qualified nurses, 3 nurse students / animal care assistants and a team of 4 receptionists and admin staff.

Hours:

  • Vets usually work 4 days a week and work 1 weekend in 3 or 4.  They do not cover Out of Hours, this is provided by a local designated hospital.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Ideally we are looking for a candidate who is friendly, driven and committed who has an IELTS certificate where appropriate.

  • They must be confident in their existing knowledge and be focused on constantly improving their knowledge and areas of expertise.

  • They must be customer service focused, be good at communicating and listening and have a positive attitude.

  • Ideally they will have some previous medical and surgical experience.

  • We will be happy to discuss individual specific areas of interest and will work with the successful candidate to assist them in reaching their own individual goals and career aspirations.
