We’re working with an established animal charity in Birmingham looking for a Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join their team.
This is definitely not your standard GP vacancy.
You’ll work across a genuinely varied caseload combining shelter medicine with private first-opinion work, giving you the opportunity to build relationships with private clients while also providing veterinary care to dogs that genuinely need it.
One day could be predominantly consultations, another could be spent in theatre, and another focused on shelter cases. There’s a particularly good surgical caseload too, including routine and more involved neutering, dentistry, cherry eye procedures, ear and eye cases and general first-opinion soft tissue surgery.
And importantly, the diary is designed to be manageable, with minimum 15-minute appointments, contained working days and an emphasis on actually finishing on time.
You’ll also have the backing of an established team of 7 RVNs.
A role with a different purpose
Shelter medicine isn't for everyone, and we won't pretend it is.
There can be difficult welfare decisions and cases where the best outcome isn't always the easiest one. But for a vet who is pragmatic, compassionate and genuinely motivated by animal welfare, it can be an incredibly rewarding environment.
You don't need previous charity or shelter experience. What matters more is understanding the environment and wanting to make a difference within it.
The rota
You'll typically work a 4-day week across 4 x 10-hour days, giving you three days away from work each week.
There is a shared Saturday rota with TOIL provided, and the aim is to move towards a 1:4 rota as the permanent veterinary team grows.
And when you're finished, you're finished. There is no out-of-hours work.
