Lead ECC Veterinary Surgeon

If you’re an experienced ECC Vet who enjoys the clinical challenge of emergency work but also wants the opportunity to lead and shape a service, this is worth a closer look.
We’re working with a busy small animal hospital looking for a Lead ECC Veterinary Surgeon to take a key role within its emergency service.
This is primarily a daytime position, but with some planned overlap with the dedicated night team. It gives you exposure across the full ECC service without committing to a permanent night rota.
The Role
This is a full-time position working 40 hours across 5 days per week, with flexibility around the exact hours.
Ideally, some of your shifts will overlap with the night team, allowing you to support clinical handovers, maintain continuity across complex cases and work closely with both sides of the ECC service.
Weekend rotation:
- 1:4 Saturdays
- 1:13 Sundays
As Lead ECC Vet, you’ll remain very hands-on clinically while also taking greater ownership of the emergency service.
You’ll help support and develop the veterinary team, drive clinical standards and ensure cases transition smoothly between the day and night teams.
Clinically
Expect a varied emergency and critical care caseload rather than routine back-to-back GP consulting.
You’ll be involved with:
- Emergency presentations and triage
- Complex medical work-ups
- Critical inpatient management
- Diagnostic imaging
- Emergency procedures and surgery
- Supporting less experienced vets with challenging cases
- Case handovers between day and night teams
The Leadership Piece
This isn't a management role that takes you away from patients.
They want an experienced clinician who can lead from the front.
Someone the wider team can turn to clinically, who enjoys developing other vets and who can help create consistency across the hospital's day and night ECC service.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence how the service operates, support clinical development within the team and help maintain high standards across emergency and inpatient care.
Who Would This Suit?
An experienced ECC Vet who is ready for more responsibility, or an existing Senior/Lead Vet who wants their next role to be much more focused around emergency and critical care.
You’ll ideally be:
- Confident managing complex emergency cases
- Comfortable making clinical decisions independently
- A strong communicator and natural mentor
- Interested in developing other clinicians
- Comfortable working collaboratively across day and night teams
- Keen to have genuine influence over how an ECC service develops
