Looking for a predominantly equine role, without losing the variety and stability of a mixed practice environment?
We’re working with an established independent practice in Northern Ireland looking for an equine-focused Veterinary Surgeon to take the lead on a meaningful equine caseload.
The day-to-day role would be predominantly equine, with your mixed practice involvement mainly coming through participation in the wider on-call rota rather than your regular working week.
This could be a strong fit for an equine vet who wants to stay clinically focused on horses, but likes the security, team structure and variety that comes with being part of a well-established mixed practice.
The role
Your core caseload will be equine, with the practice specifically looking for someone who can take ownership of a good proportion of the equine work and support the existing team in this area.
You’ll be joining an experienced mixed team.
The practice is not looking for a new graduate for this position. Ideally, you’ll have at least two years’ experience and be confident managing an equine caseload with a good level of independence.
Your involvement in mixed practice would primarily come through the shared on-call rota, rather than being expected to spend your normal week covering a heavily mixed caseload.
Rota
The standard weekend rota is approximately 1:5, alongside participation in the wider OOH rota.
During the busier spring period, this moves to around 2:6, comprising of one full weekend and one half weekend.

Who would this suit?
An experienced equine vet who wants horses to remain the clear focus of their role.
You may currently be in a mixed position where the equine side has gradually reduced, or you may already be working predominantly equine but want to join a smaller independent practice where you can have more autonomy and become a key part of the equine service.
If you want a role where equine is the day job, with mixed work mainly limited to your share of the on-call rota, this is well worth exploring.
