The UK’s top five locations to work as a vet and why you should consider working elsewhere
London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Manchester are often the first places veterinarians consider when looking for work in the UK. These cities are well known for their large practices, referral hospitals, and wide range of clinical opportunities. They also have lively social scenes, good transport links, and opportunities for further training and specialisation.
Because of this, competition for roles in these locations is high. Many vacancies receive large number of applications, which can limit negotiation on salary, working hours, and rota flexibility. In some cases, practices in these areas do not need to offer higher pay or added benefits because there is already a strong pool of candidates.
Why Working Elsewhere Can Be a Better Option
Outside the major cities, the veterinary job market often looks very different. Practices in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas often struggle to attract and retain vets, creating real opportunities for those open to relocating.
More competition, less competition
With fewer applicants per role, vets often find it easier to secure interviews and job offers outside popular urban centres. Hiring processes are typically quicker and more flexible.
Higher pay and better benefits
To attract candidates, many practices outside the big cities offer higher salaries, sign-on bonuses, relocation packages, accommodation support, and enhanced CPD budgets.
Better work-life balance
Shorter commutes, more predictable roles, and a slower pace of life often lead to improved wellbeing and reduced burnout
Broader clinical experience
Smaller teams and wider caseloads allow vets to develop faster, gain confidence, and take on more responsibility earlier in their career.
Lower cost of living
Housing, childcare, and everyday expenses are usually much lower than in major cities, meaning your income often goes further.
Thinking Long-Term
While London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Manchester will always appeal to vets looking for city life and high clinical exposure, they are not always the best option for long-term career satisfaction. For many vets, looking beyond these locations leads to better pay, greater flexibility, and a more sustainable career.
At Lloyd & Cowan Veterinary Recruitment, we work with practices across the UK and help vets explore opportunities they may not have considered – often in locations that offer real career and lifestyle advantages.
